If you’ve been following along you know that in building relationships with our nurses and premier healthcare institutions throughout the Midwest, we have discovered it’s important to put a human face to who we are, how we work, what inspires us, and more! That’s why each week we’ve featured one of our amazing team members in our “Meet Next Move” blog series.
This week we'd like to introduce you to our newest team member: Matthew Clayton Kersey, Talent Acquisition Director at Next Move. With over 5 years of experience Mathew’s main responsibility will be in connecting with all the best nurses nationwide! If that's you - say hello!
Prior to Next Move, Matthew worked as a Bar Manager where one of his career highlights was implementing the “Angel Shot” at both of the bars he managed. Angel Shots have made the news in recent years because of their life-saving potential and for the ease with which they allow a person to get out of an uncomfortable situation (let’s say a date that feels unsafe) simply by ordering an “Angel Shot” which isn’t really a shot at all – just code to discreetly ask the bartender for help.
Born in Joplin, Missouri, Mathew has a great outlook when it comes to helping nurses: You decided to become a nurse because you wanted to help people with something, you’re really good at. So let us help you – with something we’re really good at.
Mathew’s grandfather on the other hand, also has some sage advice for all you nurse’s out there: Life is good. It’s not easy. It’s not fair. But no matter what, it’s always good.” We love that perspective!
More about Matthew
Coffee or Tea: Coffee
Favorite Food: Sushi
Favorite Movie: Forrest Gump
What’s a typical day like for you? I’d say I live a pretty regular, everyday life and maybe work a little bit too much? I usually wake up around 6:00am, grab a cup of coffee and walk the dogs (Nutmeg & June). I work from around 7:00am-6:00pm with a quick break for lunch and am usually cooking dinner by the time my girlfriend gets home from work. With a glass of cabernet in hand, I like to unwind with a good movie or a couple episodes of a TV show and usually end the evening early. Repeat ad infinitum until the weekend rolls around!
Do you have any skills or talents that most people don’t know about?
How do you think your colleagues would describe you?
Loyal, hardworking, and I put others before myself.
What do you want to make sure you do before you die?
There’s an underwater Winery (Edivo) in Croatia where you can scuba dive to retrieve a bottle of wine from their “wine cellar”. I mean, how cool is that?
What’s a goal you have for yourself that you want to accomplish in the next year?
I have a couple actually. I’d like to become more flexible, hence my newfound love for yoga and I’d also like to make a positive impact with every nurse I come into contact with this year.
What is one of the most defining moments in your life?
This will sound a little cheesy – but honestly? Joining Next Move. I know I’m the new guy around here – and I promise I’m not trying to curry favor with anyone –but this is seriously the best group of people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. They’re hard-working, driven and super intelligent. I’m proud to be a part of that. I also love that I am constantly challenged every day because no two days are exactly the same. Not only am I able to better myself professionally, but what a gift it is to also be able to help those (nurses) that help others (patients).
If you could know the absolute and total truth to one question, what question would you ask?
Is there a cure to cancer?
Why did you choose your profession?
Everybody wants to have a job that gives their life a little meaning. For me – it’s absolutely rewarding knowing that at the end of the day my work means some patient out there is going to get the best healthcare possible – and I had a part in making that happen.
At the end of the day – what makes you smile?
I have a roof over my head. I have food in my belly. I have a bed to sleep in. I have people who love and care for me. What more could I want?
Cats or dogs? DOGS
My favorite word in the English language is:
If I were a superhero, my superpower would be: Flying.
What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?
Finding the right nurse for the right assignment.
Bringing in quality candidates that love what they do.
Pairing the perfect assignment with a candidate’s preferred choice & pay.

About Next Move
Unlike the huge multi-million-dollar nurse travel staffing agencies we’re a local, tightly run agency that focuses on assignments the Midwest.* Some of us are nurses ourselves, so we really “get it” when it comes to the realities of being a nurse. And there is a lot of satisfaction in being a part of an organization that really, honestly, truly cares about the happiness and well-being of our nurses.
Regardless of title, we all work together on every assignment to deliver the best results for our nurses. We take the time to not only get to know the needs of our travel nurses as individuals, but also to develop relationships with premier healthcare institutions throughout the Midwest. Often times these institutions will come to us first with exclusive contracts because of the incredible partnerships we’ve cultivated with them.
We operate under one guiding principle: give nurse travelers the best travel assignments with the highest pay and the most personalized recruitment experience possible. If that means we get a text from a nurse traveler at 4:32 am. We answer that text at 4:32 am. If that means a nurse traveler wants an assignment that’s only 32 hours a week, we find them that assignment. If that means a nurse is looking to make upwards of $3,000 a week – we bend over backwards to make that happen.
Our obligation to our travelers is quite simple:
Always give our travelers the best possible offer the first time, no low ball offers with full transparency and zero bullshit.
Be our travelers best advocate and make sure each assignment gives them exactly what they need. Specific days off? No problem. Block scheduling? No problem. Limited hours? No problem.
Make each of our individual travelers our top priority and be available to them any time of day or night.
*Constantly growing and building, we also have relationships with healthcare institutions throughout the country. Interested? Contact us today!
